Home Network Guide

This is the guide to our home network — what everything is, how to get into it, and how to fix the little things (like a camera dropping offline) without having to call anybody. Written in plain language, for you.

How to Log In

Xfinity Gateway (XB8) — the modem/router from Comcast

On any computer or phone connected to our Wi-Fi, open a browser and go to 10.0.0.1. That opens the Xfinity admin screen.

Username: admin • Password: the one on the sticker on the bottom of the XB8, or the one Tony set. If it’s forgotten, Xfinity’s app (or calling Comcast) can reset it.

TP-Link BE800 — our main router

Go to tplinkwifi.net (or 192.168.0.1) in any browser on our Wi-Fi.

Username: admin • Password: the TP-Link password Tony set (it’s the same one used in the TP-Link Tether app if you have that on your phone). Write it here when you have it: ____________

Our Wi-Fi Networks

  • RanchNet — the main 2.4 GHz network. Smart devices, cameras, and anything older connect here.
  • RanchNet5G — the main 5 GHz network from the BE800. Phones and laptops go here; it’s the fast one.
  • RanchNet5G-Front — 5 GHz from the front-of-house access point (EAP1).
  • RanchNet5G-Office — 5 GHz from the office access point (EAP2).
  • RanchNet6G — the newest, fastest band on the BE800 (6 GHz). Only newer devices use this.
  • Password (all of them): gopher_31

Rule of thumb: phones, tablets and laptops → the 5G networks. Cameras, smart plugs, anything that acts stubborn → RanchNet (2.4).

Everything on the Network (and What It Does)

DeviceWhat it is / does
Xfinity XB8The modem/router Comcast gave us. This is where the internet comes in. If ALL internet is down, this is the first thing to check (a steady green/white light is good; blinking red means trouble).
TP-Link BE800Our main router. Every device in the house talks through this one. It broadcasts RanchNet / RanchNet5G / RanchNet6G.
TP-Link BE550A second mesh router unit that extends the network.
EAP225 #1 (Front)A Wi-Fi access point for the front of the house. Broadcasts RanchNet + RanchNet5G-Front.
EAP225 #2 (Office)A Wi-Fi access point for the office side. Broadcasts RanchNet + RanchNet5G-Office.
Reolink NVR (10.0.0.159)The camera recorder box. All the security cameras record to this. If a camera is missing, this box is where you look.
Argus PT cameras (4)Solar-powered outdoor cameras: Teakwood, Driveway, Backyard, Shed. They run on 2.4 GHz (RanchNet).
Small powered Wi-Fi cameras (2)Indoor cameras in the Office and Front room.
Solar flood camera (1)The one at the rosebush.
Magi-Cams (2) + WiFi Doorbell (1)More cameras around the place — about 12 wireless cameras all told.
Bitaxes (9)The little mining computers in Tony’s corner. They run 24/7 and use the network constantly.

When Something Isn’t Working

The internet is out entirely

  • Look at the XB8. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. Wait 2–3 minutes for the lights to settle.
  • If the light stays red or keeps blinking, check the Xfinity app or call Comcast — the problem is on their end.

Wi-Fi is out but the internet is fine

  • Unplug the BE800, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes.
  • That restarts the whole Wi-Fi system, including the access points.

One camera is offline

  • Check the Reolink app first — sometimes it’s just the app, not the camera.
  • Unplug the camera (or its solar panel battery pack) for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and give it 2 minutes to reconnect.
  • If it still won’t come back, the camera may need to be re-paired to Wi-Fi (Tony can help with this — some of them need a physical reset outside).

A device won’t connect to Wi-Fi at all

  • Make sure it’s set to RanchNet (the 2.4 one) — not the 5G network. Most smart devices only speak 2.4.
  • The password for everything is gopher_31 — all lowercase.
  • Forget the network on the device, then reconnect and retype the password.

When in doubt: unplug, count to thirty, plug back in. That fixes 9 out of 10 things around here.
